DON’T DIY: Hire a Certified Electrician

Listen, everyone loves to save a bit of money when they can but when it comes to working with electricity, cutting corners is a very bad idea. Electrical fires are one of the leading causes of residential fires and property loss in Ontario.

As the wife of an electrician, I’ve become more and more respectful of electrical work as I’ve listened to Michael’s stories over the years. The tales of botched handyman repairs and risks hidden in plain sight have truly surprised me. I think that electricity is such an ever present part of our lives, we can so easily forget how inherently dangerous it truly is.

Things that never garnered a second thought from me have now become daily habits. Turning off power bars when not in use, being careful not to overload circuits, keeping furniture a few inches away from plugs and powering down before unplugging, these things have simply become second nature to me now that I understand more about the risks.

Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of home projects that can be learned from instructional videos and websites. YouTube has opened up a whole world of information to all of us and there’s definitely a special joy that comes from taking the time to learn how to do something yourself, no doubt. As a very “DIY” type of person myself, I can now confidently say that electrical work needs to be placed solidly in it’s own, separate category, somewhere far away from the DIY world. It’s not a hobby, it’s a heavily regulated, technical job that comes with some hefty risks.

Think about this, even licensed electricians take on a level of risk when they work! That’s right, they must be well rested, alert and focused when working to ensure the safest environment for themselves and others. There are habits that electricians adopt such as working with one arm behind their back during certain situations to prevent a potential circuit surging through their body. This may prevent a severe injury or even death.

Does this sound like a fun hobby or side project? Yeah, hell no.

When it comes to home maintenance and safety, this is the service to invest in. All electricians in Ontario are thoroughly trained, tested and regulated for the safety reasons stated above. There are risks that are entirely non intuitive that a licensed electrician will be very familiar with. They can alleviate the stress from you while finishing the job safely, quickly and with confidence. Don’t put yourself, your family or home at risk, invest in a licensed, electrical contractor.
